Coffee’s history in Indonesia dates back to the 1600s when Dutch colonists introduced coffee cultivation on the islands and the country quickly became one of the world’s top coffee producers. After Indonesia gained independence in the 1940s, smallholder farmers began to dominate production and the recent rise of specialty coffee in recent years has brought a new focus on quality and sustainability, further enhancing the country’s coffee reputation on the global stage.
The Wahana Estate was founded in 2006 and covers an impressive 480n hectares. The Estate uses only organic fertilisers in order to maintain a sustainable production cycle involving using canopy trees to provide shade for coffee plants.
Wahana is also a shinig example of ethical production in that is provides free housing, water and electricity, free healthcare and children’s nursery services for all of their over 1,000 employees. The Wahana Estate lies between 1200 – 1320 masl and with annual rainfall of 1,450 mm/year which is ideal for coffee production
